HeartSAFE hands-only CPR and AED training

Last year, the Richfield Fire Department responded to 4,287 calls for service and even though the word “fire” is in their title, the majority of those calls were for medical assistance.

Almost 10 percent of the department’s medical calls were for cardiac events.

In an effort to make Richfield a safer and healthier place to live, the department is working to make Richfield a HeartSAFE community.

HeartSAFE communities prepare residents to recognize and respond to sudden cardiac arrest. Any municipality, county or organization in Minnesota with a designated, trained population can apply for the HeartSAFE designation from the Minnesota Department of Health and the American Heart Association.

The Richfield Fire Department will be hosting free monthly automated external defibrillator (AED) and hands-only CPR training at Fire Station #1, 6700 Portland Avenue, the third Monday of every month at 7 p.m. starting on March 19.

“We want Richfield residents and businesses to successfully provide aid to people experiencing a sudden cardiac event,” said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Dobesh. “Knowing hands-only CPR and how to operate an AED in a moment of crisis could mean the difference between life and death.”

In Minnesota, approximately 50 percent of deaths due to heart disease happened prior to arriving at the hospital, and many of those were due to cardiac arrest. Increasing community and public awareness, placing AEDs throughout the community and educating the public on how to administer CPR can drastically reduce the number of cardiac-related fatalities in Richfield.

Only 52 other entities, which include city, county, military and educational organizations, in Minnesota have received the HeartSAFE designation.
